The benefits of stitch work
We believe every crochet project not only tells a story, but just the act of crocheting or knitting can provide you with essential health benefits.
A personal journey:
Several years ago I had a stroke. It was mild, thankfully, but it greatly affected my memory and after several years of struggle I was still dealing with the after effects. It was frustrating to say the least. I had always been a quick learner but I would routinely struggle with the simplest tasks on a daily basis. Even things I had known for years were eluding my memory! I tried so many different methods to try and heal - playing specific games, eating specific foods, exercise, etc...but the healing process was slow and maddening!
One day one of my team members at my workplace challenged me to make something amigurumi. At that time, it had been years since I had picked up a crochet hook, but...challenge accepted! At first it truly was a challenge, because although what I was trying to make was pretty beginner friendly, my recall of the knowledge I had picked up throughout my lifetime was almost non-existent. I was struggling...UGH! But I kept at it and I began to notice something: my long-lost memory was returning! The process of creating items through knots and counting was actually healing my brain!
In addition to aiding in the healing process, it also quieted my mind, which was another residual effect of the stroke. It was a moving meditation. in the way that my mind was being forced to focus, preventing it from racing in 1,000 different directions at once. And just like that, I was once again hooked! (of course that pun was intended)
Creating something through crochet is not just "being artsy", because it's repetitive, rhythmic, and extremely grounding I find when I crochet I'm more relaxed, mindful, and able to solve all the world's problems. (or at least regulate my emotions.)

Tips, tricks, and symbolism
Core Spiritual & Meditative Benefits
- Mindful Repetition: Like I mentioned earlier, crochet can act as a moving meditation simply through the natural rhythm of the process. It can regulate breathing and settle racing thoughts, so if you're someone who finds traditional meditation challenging consider trying crochet.
- Intention Setting: This is where Crocheting Intentionally comes in to play. As my mind stills, I'm able to focus on the meaning, or feeling, I want for my piece. I set intentions through repetitive mantras and visualizations so that by the time the project is complete it holds a powerful energy that can help in areas of life struggle.
- Color Energy: Color holds energy. If you're looking for a color that invoke will calm you tend to go with greens and blues. Colors to inspire creativity are more vibrant shades of yellow and orange, and red is a great color for passion and energy. Knowing this is a great way to enhance your spiritual side to crocheting, by choosing yarn colors that align with specific intentions:
- Blue: Peace and communication
- Green: Healing and abundance
- Yellow: Courage and self-empowerment
- Purple: Intuition and higher wisdom
- Red: Love and passion
- Black/white/brown: Grounding and protection
