Cultivating calm in daily life

Life moves fast, but cultivating mindful moments doesn't have to fall to the background. Explore how these small shifts create significant impact.

Ways to Protect Your Energy in Chaotic Times

In today's fast-paced world, feeling overwhelmed is common. With constant news updates, social media notifications, and the many demands of daily life, it's crucial to safeguard your energy. Here are some effective strategies to help you stay grounded and protect your well-being:

1. Set Boundaries

Establish clear boundaries with others to protect your personal time and mental space. This might mean saying "no" more often or limiting interactions with negative influences. The key to this is to communicate your limits to others, and stick to them.

2. Limit Social Media

Right now, this is a big one. While many of us want to stay connected with all that's going on, we don't need to sacrifice our piece of mind to do so. Social media can be a major energy drain. Consider taking breaks or unfollowing certain accounts that bring negativity into your feed. Focus on content that inspires and uplifts you instead. I routinely assess my feed and make adjustments as needed. By doing this, I can stay informed without putting my emotional wellness at risk.

3. Practice Mindfulness

Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine. Simple practices like meditation, deep breathing, or even a few minutes of quiet reflection can help center your thoughts and recharge your energy.

Try this grounded breathing technique to help reset your nervous system when you're feeling overwhelmed:

  • 5-4-3-2-1 Method: Combine deep breathing with identifying 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste. If all of these things are in your present field of view, even better! This anchors you in the present moment.

4. Stay Active

Physical activity is vital for maintaining a positive mindset and it doesn't need to include an hour at the gym - although, if that's what you enjoy by all means, go for it! It can be as simple as taking a walk in nature. Do you have dogs? They would love this one-on-one time with you! Yoga, or dancing in your living room is also very effective for increasing your mood. Movement helps release endorphins that combat stress. (Don't forget to sing while dancing! We're not here to judge!)

5. Connect with Nature

Spending time outdoors can be incredibly rejuvenating. Nature has a calming effect that can help you regain focus and energy. Just stepping into the sunshine, working in the garden, or sitting on a porch swing is enough to keep your emotions even. Short breaks outdoors can work wonders!

6. Cultivate Gratitude

Practicing gratitude helps shift your focus from what's chaotic to what's positive in your life. Consider keeping a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the good aspects of your day, no matter how small. Don't like to journal? That's ok! Simply taking the time at the end of each day to reflect and recognize at least one thing that you were grateful for is enough.

7. Prioritize Sleep

Adequate sleep is essential for mental clarity and emotional stability. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality rest each night, and establish a calming bedtime routine to improve your sleep hygiene. Personally, I listen to a podcast every night called Listen To Sleep, which has greatly improved the time it takes me to fall asleep as well as the quality of sleep I get. (My only beef is that I normally fall asleep so quickly I miss that story!) Also, like I mentioned on the Crystal Wisdom page, I keep the dragons blood jasper, which is our highlighted stone this month, on my nightstand. And disconnect from social media at least 1 hour before you plan to go to bed, as well, and just be present and in the moment - letting your mind and nervous system relax.

*Listen To Sleep is not affiliated with this site in any way. I just really enjoy Eric's podcast and thought you might, too.

8. Engage in Creative Activities

Creativity can be a powerful outlet for your emotional well being. Whether it's painting, writing, or playing music, creativity allows you to express yourself and recharge your energy.

9. Seek Support

If, after trying some different techniques, you can't seem to regulate, please don't hesitate to reach out for help when overwhelmed. Talking to friends, family, or professionals can provide perspective and support, reminding you that you're not alone.

10. Practice Self-Love

Be kind to yourself during challenging times. Acknowledge feelings without judgment and remember that it's okay to take time for self-care. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend.

By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can better protect your energy and maintain your focus during chaotic times. Remember that prioritizing self-care is not selfish; it's necessary for your overall well-being.

It doesn't need to be complicated. Utilizing simple practices like mindful breathing or savoring a cup of tea or moon milk (My fave!) can transform your routine - and your day. We believe true peace comes from recognizing and appreciating the present, one moment at a time!
