Living in the moment
Living in the present moment—often referred to as mindfulness—is the practice of fully engaging with the "here and now" rather than being distracted by past regrets or future anxieties.
So how does being present in life actually benefit you?
- Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Focusing on the present interrupts cycles of rumination and worry. Research shows that mindfulness can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders.
- Greater Happiness: A major Harvard study found that people are happiest when their minds are focused on what they are currently doing. Conversely, a wandering mind is often an unhappy mind.
- Improved Relationships: Being fully present during interactions allows for active listening and deeper empathy, fostering stronger emotional bonds and more meaningful connections with loved ones.
- Enhanced Focus and Productivity: By training the mind to resist distractions, you can improve concentration and complete tasks more efficiently.
- Physical Health Improvements: Mindfulness is linked to lower blood pressure, improved sleep quality, and a strengthened immune system.
- Emotional Resilience: Practicing presence helps you observe difficult emotions without being overwhelmed by them, allowing for a more balanced response to life's challenges.
- Control: The present is the only time over which you have actual control. You cannot change the past, and the future is built upon the actions you take now.
- Savoring Life: Living in the moment allows you to appreciate "simple pleasures"—the taste of coffee, the warmth of the sun, or a brief conversation—that are often missed when the mind is elsewhere.

Breath as an anchor:
Breath as an Anchor
Your breath is always with you and serves as a constant point of return. The Mindfulness App
- Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4. Repeat as needed to calm your nervous system.
- 4-7-8 Technique: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale forcefully for 8. This helps lower heart rate and reset focus.
- Belly Breathing: Place a hand on your stomach and feel it rise like a balloon as you inhale deeply through your nose.

You can turn routine tasks into opportunities for presence by slowing down:
- Eat Without Distraction: Focus solely on the flavors, textures, and aromas of your food. Try to avoid screens while eating. If possible, eat at your table with others. Engage in conversations about the day, upcoming events, or things you're excited about.
- Mindful Movement: Whether walking or cleaning, pay attention to the physical sensations—the feeling of your feet on the ground or the repetitive motion of your hands.
- Listen to Understand: In conversation, focus entirely on the other person instead of planning your response.
- Single-tasking: Commit to doing one thing at a time. Multitasking often splits your energy and prevents true presence.
- Label Your Thoughts: When your mind wanders, mentally say "thinking" or "planning," then gently return to what you are doing.
- Practice Gratitude: Identify three specific things you are grateful for in the current moment, such as the warmth of a drink or a quiet room.
- Acceptance: Instead of fighting discomfort, acknowledge it: "I am feeling [emotion] right now." This creates space between you and the feeling.

We encourage you to connect with us and share your unique ways of finding calm and intention. Join our Crocheting Intentionally community and inspire others on their mindful path. Eventually, my plan is to create a social media space that we can come together to share ideas and support each other, but until then I invite you to reach out via email at bcamacho7717@crochetingintentionally.com to share your story! I read my emails several times per day and I will always respond!
