Walking Your Dog As A Mindful Moment?
Absolutely!
Walking your dog is basically the ultimate "mindfulness cheat code" because your dog is already a professional at it. While we’re busy worrying about a weird email from three days ago, your dog is living in a world of high-definition smells and interesting sticks.
To turn your walk into a real mental reset, try "borrowing" your dog’s brain for fifteen minutes. Here’s how to make it light and breezy:
1. The "First Step" Reset
The second you clip that leash on, make a conscious deal with yourself: “The to-do list stays inside the house.” Feel the weight of your feet hitting the pavement. Notice if you’re rushing. If you are, just take a deep breath and match your pace to a comfortable stroll. This time has been set aside for you and your furry companion. Don't hurry through it, savor it!
2. Ditch the Digital
This is the hard part, I know, but I'm going to say it anyway—put the phone in your pocket (or leave it home). If you’re scrolling or listening to a true-crime podcast, you’re not actually on the walk; you’re just a person moving through space while your brain is somewhere else. Try just listening to the ambient noise of the neighborhood instead.

3. The Great "Sniff-ari"
We usually tug the leash when they stop to sniff a random tuft of grass, right? But what if we didn't? What if...on this mindful walk...we let them lead for a minute. Watch their ears twitch and their nose go a mile a minute. Understand that to them, that patch of grass is like reading the morning news. Observing their pure curiosity helps pull you out of your own head and into a world of mindful presence.
4. The 3-3-3 Game
If your brain starts spiraling back to work or stress, you're not failing, you're just being human. Acknowledge the thought by saying, "I see you. I'll explore it later.", then play this quick game while you walk:
- 3 Things You See: (A red car, a budding tree, the way the light hits a window).
- 3 Things You Hear: (The jingle of the collar, a distant bird, the wind).
- 3 Things You Feel: (The breeze on your face, the pull of the leash, the texture of your jacket).
It’s like an "emergency brake" for an overactive mind. It can take some practice but it gets easier, honest!

5. The Tail-Wag Check-In
Look down at your dog. Usually, they are just stoked to be there with you. Let that vibe rub off on you! Take a second to appreciate that for this little window of time, your only "job" is to walk and exist with your best friend.
Take a cue from your furry friend and just enjoy the moment. By the time you get back to the front door, you’ll probably find that the "big problem" you were chewing on feels just a little bit smaller.
Do you have a favorite route you usually take, or do you like to wander aimlessly and see where the leash leads?
Share your mindful journey
We believe in the power of shared wisdom and connection. How do you integrate mindfulness into your daily rhythm? We encourage you to connect with us and share your unique ways of finding calm and intention. Join our Crocheting Intentionally community and inspire others on their mindful path. Eventually, my plan is to create a social media space that we can come together to share ideas and support each other, but until then I invite you to reach out via email at bcamacho7717@crochetingintentionally.com to share your story! I read my emails several times per day and I will always respond!
